Uganda Hippos to start their AFCON campaign against CAR: Match preview

Uganda’s U20 team, the Hippos are set to begin their campaign in the AFCON tournament today against Central African Republic (CAR).

The game will be played at the Suez Canal Authority stadium, Ismailia 5pm EAT.

This is the opening game of group B in the tournament.

The Uganda Hippos have undergone intense preparations as they played 8 build up matches.

7 of these were in Uganda and one in Egypt against the Egyptians.

6 games have been won, and the other two drawn and lost apiece .

Isma Mugulusi who is the captain is hoping to help the Hippos achieve qualification to the World Cup tournament in Indonesia between May-June 2023.

The Greek based midfielder will be playing his second successive U20 AFCON tournament.

The coach Jackson Mayanja is hopeful for a big emphatic result.

“Since my first day with this amazing team, the intention has been clear and that is to qualify the team to the World Cup and everything must start against Central African Republic.” He said.

The team captain Mugulusi is also very hopeful of positive results by the end of the tournament.

“We are happy and in good mood as players. We are thinking about nothing but this tournament and the first game against Central African Republic is very important to us if we are to achieve our mission of going to the World Cup.” He stated.

South Sudan will be going head to head with Congo Brazzaville in the other Group B game.

Uganda in the last tournament reached the finals in Mauritania.

The team which was under KCCA coach Morley Byekwaso unfortunately lost to Ghana 2-0 in the finals.

The teams which reach the quarterfinals will represent Africa in the U20 World Cup.
