Barcelona crowned Laliga Champions with 4 games to spare
May 15, 2023
A 4-2 win over Espanyol yesterday confirmed FC Barcelona as the Laliga champions for the 2022-2023 season. Goals from Robert Lewandowski, a brace and Alejandro Balde and Jules Kounde sealed all maximum points for the La Blaugrana.
The win took Barcelona to 85 points 14 more than their closest rivals Real Madrid who are at 71 points. Even if the Los Blancos were to win their remaining 4 games and Barcelona lost theirs, they wouldn’t match up.
This was Xavi Hernandez‘ first full season in charge of the Catalans and this his first league trophy. The trophy was also Barcelona’s first Laliga trophy since 2019.
Apparently, it was also the club’s first Liga cup without their former legend Lionel Messi since the 1998-99 season.
Barca’s players had to flee to the dressing room after full time at the RCDE Stadium. This was the Espanyol fans tried to attack them since this was a Catalan derby.
This was Barcelona‘s 27th league title and they are now 8 behind Real Madrid who have a record 35 trophies.
Xavi will be hoping for more reinforcements in the coming summer transfer window. Their primary target seems to be securing the return of Lionel Messi who is currently at PSG.
However, they will have to first deal with their financial crisis. A lot of players especially the aged ones are expected to leave the club in the summer. Captain, Sergio Busquets has already revealed how he will be leaving the club in the summer
