New Selecao King as Neymar breaks Pele’s Brazilian record

Al Hilal forward Neymar Jr inked his name into the record books of Brazilian football history by becoming the country’s all time top scorer. The 31 year old netted twice as Brazilian thrashed Bolivia 5-1 in their first qualifier of the 2026 World Cup.

Neymar could have had a hattrick in the game but missed a 17th minute penalty which was saves by Guillermo Viscarra.

Coming into the game, both Pele and Neymar were tied at 77 goals. Pele who died last year in December from cancer scored his goals between 1957-1971.

Neymar who’s now scored his goals in 125 appearances said that he didn’t imagine he would achieve such a feat. And additionally said that he’s not better than Pele.

“I never imagined reaching this record. I want to say that I am not better player than Pele,” said Neymar after the game. “I always wanted to make my own story, write my name in the history of Brazilian football and the national team. And today I did that.”

The Pele Foundation also recognized the former Barcelona and PSF forward’s achievement whilst congratulating him.

“Congratulations, Neymar Jr, for surpassing the King in goals for the Brazilian National Team in official FIFA matches,” it said on social media. “Surely Pelé is applauding you today!”

Despite all this scintillating and sublime displays, Neymar is yet to lead Brazil to a major trophy. And this is definitely his only shortfall on the international stage.

The 2024 Copa America and 2026 FIFA World Cup will however be perfect opportunities for him to have the last Samba dance and etch his name into the all time unforgettable greats. Meanhile Rodrygo grabbed the other two goals and Raphinha the other.
