Lionel Messi extended his grip last night as the greatest footballer of all time as he won his record extending 8th Ballon D’or winner at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris. A star studded ceremony had many ex footballers, celebrities, current footballers, coaches and ex coaches plus other celebrities in attendance.
The Argentinean was heavily rumored to be the eventual winner of the prestigious award. His closest competitor of the night was none other than Erling Halaand of Manchester City.
However, Messi’s 2022 World Cup campaign is one that will go down in history forever. And the Ballon d’Or was the icing on the cake. His award was presented by his Inter Miami boss David Beckham.
In his speech, the former Barcelona and PSG player said that he’s glad he was able to achieve all his dreams as a footballer. And he dedicated his win to the late Diego Armando Maradona as a birthday tribute.
“I’m delighted to be here once more, to be able to enjoy this moment one more time. To be able to win the World Cup and really achieve my dream, I want to share this with all those who were involved.”
Jude Bellingham won the Kopa trophy which is awarded to the best young footballer. He had a very magnificent year with Borussia Dortmund and England at the World Cup. He has continued his form with Real Madrid.
Additionally Emiliano Martinez was crowned the best goalkeeper In the awards. He was a major part of Argentina’s world cup winning campaign.
Besides Erling Halaand, Kylian Mbappe and Kevin De Bruyne finished on the podium alongside Messi. The Argentinean complimented Halaand said that he also deserves to win and will surely in future win many of them. Aitana Bonmati won the women’s Ballon D’or.
