At the 13th African Games, which are now taking place in Ghana, Husinah Kobugabe and Gladys Mbabazi of Uganda won the nation’s first gold medal on Sunday night.
In the women’s doubles at the Multipurpose Borteyman Sports Complex, the duo grinned their way to victory.
Uganda won gold thanks to Kobugabe and Mbabazi’s 2-0 (23-21) and 21-14 victories over Algeria’s pair.
The men’s double was won by the Algerian team of Mammeri K and Medel Y.S. when they defeated Olofua and Ofeyoria of Nigeria 2-0(21-16) and ( 21-15).
Opeyori of Nigeria won the gold medal in men’s singles after defeating Olofua of his home country 2-1 (21-23), 21-17, and 21-15.
After losing to Johanita Scholtz of South Africa in the women’s singles competition, Kobugabe was awarded a silver medal. Bronze went to Uganda’s Fadilah Shamika in the same division.
Algeria’s Mammeri K and Mammeri T.V defeated Egypt 2-0 (21-11 and 21-15) to win gold in the mixed doubles.
