Arsenal get huge boost in pursuit of Viktor Gyokeres

After paying to lessen Coventry’s sell-on clause, Sporting Lisbon appears to be getting ready to trade Viktor Gyokeres, an Arsenal target, this summer.

After scoring 43 goals in 50 appearances for Sporting, Gyokeres has long been linked to a move to the Emirates. Now, Sport is claiming that the Portuguese team has paid Coventry €2 million (£1.7 million) to lower their 15% sell-on clause to only 10%.

Gyokeres has a €100 million (£86 million) release clause in his contract, which the Gunners could activate after losing out on top target Benjamin Sesko, so the transfer could pay off handsomely for Sporting.

Arsenal is also considering signing Spanish midfielder Mikel Merino, although Real Sociedad is keen to keep him and has extended an offer to him.

“I would like him not to leave,” club president Jokin Aperribay told Mundo Deportivo. If he tells us that he likes any of the offers he has on the table, we will see. We are not negotiating with any club now.

“We are aware that Merino has offers, and we know them. The conversation with him and those around him has been very sincere and hopefully his decision is to stay, he already knows that we want him to stay. He has had a renewal offer for some time.”
