Arsenal eying Liverpool’s Darwin Nunez in transfer deadline deal

August 28, 2024

It has been reported sensationally that Darwin Nunez could be sold by Liverpool to Arsenal. It is “improbable but not impossible” that a deal will be reached before Friday’s transfer deadline.

The report surfaced after Nunez’s campaign got off to a testy start under new coach Arne Slot. He began it on the Liverpool bench, exactly where he finished the previous campaign under Jurgen Klopp.

When he did came on against Brentford, some fans reacted impatiently since he was quickly caught offside. Thus far, Diogo Jota has solidified his position as the obvious top pick down the center.

Nevertheless, it’s a little absurd to think that Liverpool may use the remaining transfer window to sell Nunez to Arsenal. That’s because “AFCAMDEN” shared the purported update, at least partially.

He has already revealed a tidbit of information implying that Curtis Jones might be headed to the United Arab Emirates. Liverpool is aware that it is better to take his statements with a bucketload of salt rather than just a pinch.

And there’s the issue of Liverpool’s unwavering position about Nunez. The club has “no intention” of moving the striker, and neither loan nor permanent offers will be considered, the ECHO reported last month in the midst of rumors of interest from Turkey.

Naturally, having personally running the rule over Nunez at the beginning of the campaign, Slot’s perspective may have altered. Furthermore, since elite teams are already working in increasingly exclusive environments that may restrict their ability to make transfers, the notion of major clubs trading players is not as absurd as it once was.

In actuality, Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus—players Arsenal acquired from Chelsea and Manchester City—are currently the team’s two primary striker alternatives. A move for Nunez would thus fit a well-known trend.

Furthermore, Nunez is rumored to be “keen” to relocate to London and team up with Mikel Arteta to compete for championships. (Last season, the Uruguayan won more hardware with Liverpool than he would have at the Emirates.)

However, the club record acquisition at Anfield won’t be written off just yet. Slot has made no secret of the caliber of the team he inherited and his intention to use coaching to enhance what he already has.
