September 4, 2024
Ollie Watkins, Cole Palmer, and Phil Foden have pulled out of the England team for their forthcoming Nations League matches.
Although interim England manager Lee Carsley called up Manchester City forward Foden, who was just crowned PFA Player of the Year, Foden was unable to report to the squad due to illness.
Both Aston Villa’s Watkins and Chelsea’s Palmer reported for duty at St George’s Park, but according to the Football Association, they have returned to their respective clubs “to continue their rehabilitation from ongoing issues”.
against September 7, England takes against the Republic of Ireland in Dublin. Three days later, they welcome Finland at Wembley.
These will be their first games since they were defeated by Spain in the Euro 2024 final played on 14th July.
Soon after, on August 9, under-21s manager Carsley was named interim manager following Gareth Southgate’s resignation.
He named his starting lineup for the forthcoming Nations League matches, giving Angel Gomes, Tino Livramento, Morgan Gibbs-White, and Noni Madueke call-ups.
Carsley was the England Under-21 manager when Gomes, a winger for Lille, Gibbs-White, a midfielder for Nottingham Forest, Madueke, a forward for Chelsea, and Livramento, a defender for Newcastle, all played for him.
Jack Grealish, a playmaker for Manchester City, and Harry Maguire, a defender for Manchester United, were called up after being left out of England’s initial Euro 2024 roster.
