Uganda Cranes host DR Congo in search of first AFCON win
September 9, 2024
Uganda will meet Congo at Namboole tonight in an attempt to win their first-ever Africa Cup of Nations qualification match. In the first meeting, the Uganda Cranes came dangerously close to winning all three points against South Africa.
The Cranes led Bafana Bafana 2-1 on Friday thanks to goals from Denis Omedi and Rogers Mato, both of whom struck goals with style. But in the final minute of play, Thalente Mbatha scored a goal to guarantee a share of the victory.
Congo, which defeated South Sudan 1-0 at home, is hoping to win two of the campaign’s games when they take the field.
“The point away to South Africa will count for nothing if we don’t beat Congo at home,” said Paul Put, the Cranes coach who previously handled the Red Devils.
“We shall do all it takes to win at home and the lads are aware of that,” he added.
Muhammad Shaban, who missed the tie with South Africa due to an injury he acquired during practice, is remains doubtful for the game.
Both Kenneth Ssemakula and Halid Lwaliwa, who missed the Friday encounter due to visa issues, are now available.
Since the FUFA did not formally inform Bobosi Byaruhanga when he did not show up in Pretoria, it is still unknown if he is in camp.
Morgan Poaty looked injured ten minutes into the second half of Congo’s encounter against South Sudan. The 27-year-old is therefore dubious for his team’s trip to Kampala.
If Poaty is ruled out of the game, Brunallergene Junior Etou is the front-runner to start in his only other international outing.
