Lionel Messi reveals if he will play the 2026 World Cup

October 18, 2024

Although he isn’t obsessed with playing in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Argentina’s great Lionel Messi didn’t completely rule out making an appearance.

“When I get to do what I love I am happy,” Messi said on Thursday, per ESPN’s Lizzy Becherano. “I value that more than reaching the 2026 tournament. I haven’t set a goal to reach the World Cup, but more so to live day-to-day and be well.”

Messi led Argentina to triumph in 2022, and the team is now trying to become the first nation to win consecutive World Cups since Brazil in 1962.

After a 3-3 draw, the 37-year-old was instrumental in the team’s victory over France in the final, which they won 4-2 on penalties. Argentina won the match after a fierce battle thanks to two goals from Messi and a penalty kick conversion.

The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner stated that it will “surely” be his final World Cup before the competition in Qatar.

Messi played for Argentina in the Copa América in 2024, helping his nation win a record-breaking 16th Copa title and complete a successful title defense.

In a 6-0 victory over Bolivia on Tuesday, he recorded a hat-trick, continuing his recent participation in South American World Cup qualifiers. He ended with two assists as well.

Although the renowned football player seemed to be hinting to a possible comeback, he admitted that “I know these can be my last games” after defeating Bolivia and discussed staying in the present (via Becherano).

“In the moment, we will see,” Messi said. “I don’t like to accelerate time or look ahead. I try to enjoy every day. I hope I can keep playing at this level to feel good and be happy.”

Messi is still unsure about whether he will play in the World Cup again in 2026, despite the fact that he is currently involved with MLS team Inter Miami and continues to compete in World Cup qualifiers.
