Ahead of their crucial Premier League matchup with Liverpool this weekend, Arsenal is facing increasing difficulties. Left back Riccardo Calafiori was substituted out of Tuesday’s 1-0 Champions League victory over Shakhtar Donetsk due to a right knee twist, and the team already has defender Jurrien Timber and important attacking players Martin Odegaard and Bukayo Saka on the injury list.
“He felt something, he could not continue playing,” Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said of the Italy defender. “Bit of a worry.”
William Saliba, a center back, will also be absent from Liverpool’s match due to his suspension following his red card during Saturday’s loss to Bournemouth.
Saka’s condition was less clear after the winger seemed to strain his hamstring while playing for England last week, but Odegaard, the captain of Arsenal, is practically set to miss action as he recovers from an ankle injury he suffered last month. Saka did not play against Shakhtar or against Bournemouth, and Arteta wasn’t overly optimistic about the winger’s prospects of playing for Liverpool on Sunday.
“He wasn’t able to train yet, so that’s unlikely,” Arteta said.
