Denis Omedi, a forward for both Uganda Cranes and Kitara FC, has received a nomination for the FIFA Puskas Award. This accolade is awarded to the player who scores the finest goal within a 12-month period of the football season. The talented striker was in remarkable form for the Royals a few months back when he netted an incredible goal during the FUFA Super 8 tournament in August.
In a match played at the MTN Philip Omondi stadium in Lugogo, Kitara found themselves behind KCCA by a score of 1-0 when Omedi got a long ball inside the KCCA box. He was just barely in the area when he skillfully controlled the ball with his left foot.
He maneuvered past the KCCA defender trying to mark him and expertly curled the ball into the net using a stunning rabona. The shot soared well over the KCCA goalkeeper. This remarkable goal ignited wild celebrations from the Kitara supporters, while the fans of KCCA applauded the brilliance of the strike.
Furthermore, this goal gained viral popularity across various social media platforms, with many dubbing it a contender for the FIFA Puskas Award. It has now officially been included in the list of 11 goals in contention.
Omedi will face tough competition from players such as Mohammed Kudus from West Ham, Alejandro Garnacho from Manchester United, and Federico DiMarco from Inter Milan.
Voting for the award is currently open on the FIFA website. Participants only need to sign in or register, choose their preferred goal, and submit their vote. The winner will be revealed when the voting period concludes. The 2024 FIFA Best awards are set to take place in January 2025.
