Vipers narrowly overcome Maroons to maintain lead at the top

January 7, 2025

Vipers SC defeated Maroons 1-0 in Kitende to finish first in the Uganda Premier League’s first round. The Venoms defeated the Luzira-based team thanks to a crucial goal from Moses Waiswa. Mashood Ssali, an experienced referee, formally retired from officiating in the same game.

Waiswa’s well-executed free kick to the retiring Ssali at the edge of the box in the eighteenth minute gave the home team the lead. Simon Tamale, the goalkeeper for Maroons FC, kept his team in the game multiple times by stopping Hillary Mukundane and Allan Okello, who were in form.

Vipers maintained their lead and finished the first round with 34 points, four ahead of second-place NEC FC, who play Mbale Heroes on Tuesday, and fifth-place Maroons FC with 22 points.
