Barcelona finally managed to register Dani Olmo and Pau Victor
January 10, 2025
Moving forward Pau Víctor and Dani Olmo, who cost around €60 million to sign, have emerged as the public face of FC’s predicament. Joan Laporta, the board’s president, has been looking for different ways to raise money.
Dani Olmo and Pau Víctor are now legally registered as FC Barcelona players by La Liga and the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), allowing them to compete in the Supercopa final.
After their names were taken down on January 1st, the 26-year-old midfielder and the 23-year-old forward are now classified as first-team players on the websites of the regulatory bodies. They are regarded as the Catalan club’s most recent additions.
The Higher Sports Council’s (CSD) decision, which approved the Catalan club’s requested temporary solution to permit both players to compete in the Supercopa de España final, made this restoration feasible.
After the ruling, CSD stated that “the arguments used by the players and FC Barcelona remain unknown” at this point, acknowledging that their position is made apparent without the appeal having been heard, as are the viewpoints of La Liga and the federation.
This authorization is still temporary even though the CSD recognized Barça’s urgent interim measure permitting Olmo and Victor to play. FC Barcelona advanced to the Supercopa de España finals on Wednesday after defeating Athletic Bilbao 2-0. They will now play Real Madrid Saudi Arabia over the weekend.
A combined commission made up of the federation and La Liga denied both players’ registrations on January 4th, with particular attention paid to Olmo, who was a vital member of Spain’s squad that won the championship the previous summer.
This ruling came after they played on a provisional license for the first half of the season. The Catalans, who took advantage of defender Andreas Christensen’s injury to register Olmo, did not provide any financial guarantees, and their force majeure claims were rejected.
This happened during a financial crisis when their wage bill was in excess of their means. Pau Victor and Olmo, who were both signed for about €60 million, have both come to represent the crisis under Laporta’s leadership, who looked for other sources of revenue, such as the sale of VIP box operations at Camp Nou, but did so after the cutoff time for La Liga.
The licenses for both players had expired, preventing them from re-registering at the same club, even though La Liga confirmed that Barça had obtained enough guarantees to adhere to financial fair play and resume regular operations. The ‘culés’ are currently contesting this issue in the appeals process.
