After being held to a 0-0 tie by Algeria’s MC Alger in Dar es Salaam, Tanzanian champions Young Africans (Yanga) were denied a trip to the CAF Champions League quarterfinals.

Yanga had nothing to settle for going into the final and crucial Group A match other than a win if they wanted to advance to the knockout stages. In order to achieve the desired outcome, their opponents, MC Alger, required at least a draw and then persevered for a considerable amount of time.

Khalid Aucho, the captain of the Uganda Cranes, played for the Tanzanian champions, who were unlucky that night.

The outcome moved MC Alger up to nine points, one more than Yanga, who came in third place in Group A. Al Hilal of Sudan, led by Florent Ibenge, won Group A with ten points, while TP Mazembe came in last with five.

The lone player from Uganda still in the competition is Denis Onyango, but in order to advance to the quarterfinals, his Mamelodi Sundowns must defeat AS FAR in the final.
