Following the final whistle of the 2-2 Merseyside derby draw between Everton and Liverpool at Goodison Park, the Premier League provided clarification on the red cards shown to Curtis Jones and Abdoulaye Doucoure.
Jones reacted angrily when he saw Doucoure running to celebrate in front of the Liverpool fans after James Tarkowski’s strike in the 98th minute set off wild scenes at Goodison.
Referee Michael Oliver would later show both Liverpool manager Arne Slot and assistant Sipke Hulshoff red cards as several players crowded in to separate the two. There was no clarification on the seasons for the red cards in a Premier League statement. It stated: “The referee issued second yellow cards and red cards to Curtis Jones and Abdoulaye Doucoure following an altercation after the final whistle. Arne Slot and his assistant Sipke Hulshoff were also shown straight red cards after the final whistle.”
After Doucoure was accused of offside and Beto was accused of fouling Ibrahima Konate, Liverpool protested Tarkowski’s equalizing goal. The Premier League did not issue a statement about the allegations of a foul, but they did clarify that Doucoure was onside during the build-up to the goal. A declaration said: “The referee’s call of goal was checked and confirmed by the VAR- who established that Doucouré was in an onside position in the build-up.”
