At the very least, Vipers SC will need to pay more than Shs200 million to return their striker Abubaker Lawal’s lifeless body to Nigeria.
The six-time Uganda Premier League champions have also stated that on Sunday, March 2, 2025, Lawal’s body will be returned to Sokoto, Nigeria.
According to Vipers SC President Dr. Lawrence Mulindwa, the club would cover all costs associated with returning their deceased player’s body home.
“Repatriating the body is not easy but I can assure you, Lawal’s body will be back in Nigeria on Sunday. It is an expensive one and it is also a long journey from Lagos to Sokoto. We are going to charter a plane that will take his body from Lagos to his home area Sokoto.” Said Mulindwa
According to police preliminary reports, Lawal was declared dead on Monday morning after allegedly falling from the balcony of Voice Shopping Mall in Bwebajja, where he had gone to visit his buddy Omary Naima, who is from Tanzania.
Lawal joined Vipers from Rwanda’s AS Kigali in July 2022, and the Venoms achieved the coveted Cup double in 2022–2023. In addition to Vipers SC, Lawal had previously played for FC Nasarawa, Wikki Tourists FC, and Kano Pillars FC in the Nigerian Premier League.
