September 21, 2023
Cameroon international Andre Onana decided to face the press and take responsibility for Manchester United’s 4-3 loss to Bayern Munich. In the opening game of Group A in the UEFA Champions League.
Most people thought that the Red Devils were in a for a good thrashing but it turned out to be the opposite. In fact they came quite close but individual mistakes cost them including Onana’s.
The former Inter Milan and Ajax goalie fumbled with Leroy Sane’s shot in the 28th minute of the game giving the hosts their lead.
Bayern Munich finished the first half with a 2 goal lead after Serge Gnabry doubled the lead in the 32nd minute. Erik Ten Hag’s side came back with determination. And new striker Rasmus Hojlund netted their first in the 49th minute.
However, United sank deeper after former Tottenham Hotspurs striker Harry Kane restored Bayern’s 2 goal lead from the spot following a Christian Eriksen handball.
With 2 minutes to the 90, United were given a lifeline after Casemiro scored. But Mathys Tel restored the German giants 2 goal lead in the 92nd minute.
Casemiro grabbed his second for the night and United’s third. But there wasn’t enough time for the Premier League side to mount a memorable comeback.
After the game Onana owned up to his mistake and said that it had cost his side the game.
“It’s my responsibility, because of me we didn’t win — and I have to learn from it”. “I have a lot to prove, because to be honest my start in Man United is not so good”. “It was me who let the team down”.
The 25 year old was brought in to fill the huge gaps left by United’s long serving goalkeeper David de Gea. Onana has however conceeded 13 goals in his first 6 goals in all competitions.
United will be back in action in the Premier League against Burnley on Saturday.
