East Africa is going to host the first ever Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament for the first time in history. This is after the East Africa Pamoja bid to host the prestigious continental tournament was approved today in Cairo Egypt.
This bid was launched a while ago and for Uganda, the delegation was led by the junior sports minister, Hon Peter Ogwang.
This will be the first time that three countries are hosting the tournament. The AFCON has been hosted by 18 countries ever since it was introduced. However none of these have ever been from East Africa.
All the countries have already shared the good news through their different social media pages. Both Kenya and Tanzania have CAF approved stadiums.
This however can’t be said the same of Uganda. Nakivubo stadium is on the verge of being unveiled but it’s not clear if it will meet the required standards. Namboole stadium is still in the works while Vipers’ St. Mary’s stadium falls short of the required standards. However, there are still three years to this tournament and a lot can happen indeed.
