After their incredible group stage exploits, six teams have qualified for the CAF Champions League quarterfinals.
With one game remaining in the group stage, holders Ahly defeated Ghana’s Medeama 1-0 to guarantee their place in the quarterfinals.
Asec Mimosas from Ivory Coast, Mamelodi Sundowns from South Africa, Petro de Luanda from Angola, TP Mazembe, a FIFA Club World Cup finalist from Africa. And Young Africans from Tanzania were also among the teams who advanced.
The results of Ahly and Young Africans’ respective victories in Group D determined the fate of Mamelodi Sundowns and TP Mazembe. It indicated that the two spots that remain will be fought for in Groups B and C.
Wydad AC of Morocco, who had a sluggish start to their Group Stage campaign, improved their prospects of moving forward in Group B. This followed a close 1-0 victory over Jwaneng Galaxy in Botswana.
They are currently level on six (6) points with Simba AC, who will play Jwaneng Galaxy in the championship round the next week. And Wydad, who will play the acrobatic Asec Mimosas.
Due to Petro de Luanda’s qualification, Esperance Sportive de Tunis and Al-Hilal will compete for second place in Group C. On Saturday, the two teams play each other in Tunis.
