Peruth Chemutai of Uganda won silver in the women’s 3000m Olympic final on Tuesday at Stade de France after finishing second.
The current Tokyo champion, Chemutai, had to settle for silver after finishing second in a time of 8:53.34.
She sets a new national record in the final and becomes the first female Ugandan to win two Olympic medals.
Chemutai became the first female Ugandan to win an Olympic gold medal in the Tokyo Games.
At the crowded Stade de France, Bahrain’s Winfred Mutile, the world champion in the distance, defeated the Ugandan steeplechaser to win the Olympic championship in 8:52.76, setting a new games record.
In addition to the famous Joshua Cheptegei’s gold in the 10000m, Uganda has now won two medals at the present Olympics in Paris thanks to Chemutai’s silver.
Chemutai rises to become the second-most successful Olympian from Uganda ever. Only boxer Leo Rwabwogo and Joshua Cheptegei had more than one medal won at the Games.
In the history of the Olympic Games, Uganda has managed 13 medals total, eight of which are gold, all of which have come from the athletics competition.
