Liverpool on the verge of signing Martin Zubimendi

August 8, 2024

Martin Zubimendi, a 25-year-old midfielder for Real Sociedad, is now anticipated to agree to a transfer to Anfield as Liverpool completes a deal for him.

After being quiet about their transfer plans for the majority of the summer, Liverpool’s chase of Zubimendi, the winner of Euro 2024, is moving along quickly.
The Spaniard now seems to be leaning towards a switch, having gone from being a mystery No. 6 target on Tuesday morning to being announced as a primary candidate on Wednesday afternoon.

Zubimendi would still need to be persuaded to join Arne Slot’s team, it was clarified in response to the first rumors of Liverpool’s interest in the midfielder.

This is after he previously declined offers to join the team he has called home since he was twelve, including moves to Arsenal, Bayern Munich, and Barcelona.

Liverpool is “exploring a deal,” and Ornstein stated in an update on Wednesday night that Sociedad “expects” their No. 4 to consent to a transfer.

“Everything seems to indicate that, unless the player changes his mind, [Liverpool’s] offensive could be successful,” wrote journalist Mikel Recalde of Noticias de Gipuzkoa earlier on Wednesday.

Recalde stated that he was there as a “atmosphere of resignation” at Sociedad over Zubimendi’s future, with sources within the club having “made it clear that Liverpool are prepared to pay the €60 million clause.”

The midfield player “would be open to giving them the final ‘yes’,” according to Relevo, who also add that the buyout clause is worth €60 million (£51.5 million) and must be paid in full up front. However, Relevo suggests that another deal may be arranged.

“Liverpool are considering whether to execute the midfielder’s clause or to pay a higher amount, but to do so with a payment formula that is more agreeable to its accounts,” they claim.

Stated differently, Liverpool can agree to a higher fee but spread the cost across several tax years by paying the difference in installments.

That would enable more investment in the near future, and if Zubimendi signs, sporting director Richard Hughes’ job would probably not end.

With the nature of this agreement and the fact that Liverpool frequently makes high-profile acquisitions behind closed doors, it wouldn’t be shocking if a significant development took place on Thursday.

It was said that Zubimendi’s allegiance to Sociedad was the largest speed hurdle, but it may have been overcome.
