Man City dealt huge blow as Rodri is set to miss entire season with ACL

September 24, 2024

Tests conducted on Monday morning revealed that Rodri, a midfielder for Manchester City, may have sustained an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear in his right knee during Sunday’s match with Arsenal. As a result, the player would most likely miss the remainder of the season, an ESPN source said.

The Spain international is scheduled for additional testing, the source informed ESPN, but all signs lead to an ACL damage. He’ll probably have surgery in Barcelona.

John Stones gave City a late equalizer against Arsenal to ensure a 2-2 draw at the Etihad Stadium. With 13 points from their opening five games, Pep Guardiola’s club was guaranteed to stay atop the standings thanks to the outcome.

Rodri was instrumental in Spain’s victory and was chosen as the tournament’s player of the year at Euro 2024.

Being one of the favorites to win the Ballon d’Or, his injury will be a major setback for City, who are trying to win the Premier League for the fifth time in a row.

Rodri hinted last week that players are “close” to walking off the field due to worries about their mounting workload.

The 28-year-old participated in 63 matches for his club and nation last season, which concluded on July 14 with the Euro 2024 final.

When asked if the demanding schedule would cause players to go on strike, Rodri responded, “I think we are getting close to that; it makes sense.” It seems like a universal issue. Any player, I believe, would tell you the same thing: it’s not Rodri’s or anything else’s opinion.

“I think it’s the general opinion of the players. And if it keeps this way, there will be a moment where we have no other option, I really think, but let’s see.

“I don’t know what’s going to happen, but it’s something that worries us because we are the guys that suffer.”
