Which countries have the chance of qualifying for the AFCON as 5 slots remain?
November 18, 2024
A total of nineteen nations have already secured their spots for the AFCON 2025 tournament, which is set to be held in Morocco next year. The tournament will kick off on December 21, 2025, and will conclude with the final match on January 18, 2026.
With five rounds of the qualification process completed, matchday six will determine the five teams that will join the already qualified nineteen in Africa’s premier football event.
Botswana, currently in second place, is vying for a final spot in the group alongside Cape Verde and Mauritania.
There is only a two-point difference between Botswana, Cape Verde, and Mauritania.
Botswana is scheduled to play against record African champions Egypt, who have already qualified, in Cairo. A loss for Botswana could shift the focus to Cape Verde and Mauritania, who are competing for a potential last-minute qualification.
In Group D, Libya has a chance to rise from last place to second if they can defeat Benin at home on Monday.
Benin, currently in second, will need a positive result away against Libya to make it through. Rwanda also has a slim chance of advancing but must upset the group leaders and already qualified Nigeria.
In Group F, Sudan only requires a point against the already qualified Angola on Monday. However, a defeat for Sudan could create an opportunity for Niger, who must secure a victory away against the already eliminated Ghana.
In Group I, Guinea-Bissau and Mozambique are set to clash in the Lusophone Rivalry on Tuesday, with the winner of this match earning qualification.
The victorious team in this matchup will join group leaders Mali in Morocco.
In Group H, Guinea enjoys a two-point lead over Tanzania. The two teams are set to meet in a crucial match in Dar es Salaam, with Guinea needing just one point to qualify. Meanwhile, Tanzania must win to secure the second spot behind DR Congo, who have already qualified for the tournament.
Qualified teams for Afcon 2025 include Morocco (hosts), Algeria, Angola, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Comoros, DR Congo, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Ivory Coast, Nigeria, Mali, Senegal, South Africa, Tunisia, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.
