The leaders of the Uganda Premier League, NEC FC, were held to a 1-1 draw against URA FC on Thursday at Nakivubo Stadium.
In the first half, Alex Isabirye’s squad was more aggressive and took the lead with a goal from Godfrey Ssekibengo, whose low shot beat NEC goalkeeper Hannington Ssebwalunyo in the 23rd minute.
Shortly after the 30-minute mark, Moses Aliro and James Begisa both had great chances to increase the tax collectors’ lead, but neither was able to score with the open goal in front of them.
After the break, Hussein Mbalangu substituted Allan Mugalu for experienced midfielder Muzamir Mutyaba.
Unlike the first half, the league leaders dominated play in the second half.
Their efforts paid off in the 66th minute when Paul Mucureezi leveled the score.
Just five minutes later, URA’s Hudu Mulikyi was shown a red card by referee Mashood Ssali for retaliating against Enock Ssebaggala.
In the closing moments of regular time, returning player Atendele Geriga prevented Joseph Ssemujju’s shot from crossing the line.
Mucureezi just barely missed the chance to clinch a victory for the visitors in injury time, but his attempt was thwarted by URA FC defender Enock Walusimbi.
Mbalangu’s team remains at the top of the league standings with 23 points, while URA is now at 15 points.
