Reigning CHAN champions Morocco threatens to pull out of 2023 edition

December 28, 2022

The current African Nations Championship champions, Morocco have threatened to pull out of next year’s edition set to be held in Algeria.

Reports have it that the Moroccan FA want their national team to be granted access by Algeria to fly from Morocco direct to Constantine where the tournament is set to take place.

It’s however waited to see if Algeria will grant this wish as the two countries have had an unfriendly relationship for the past few years.

This resulted into Algeria banning all flights from Morocco.

A journey that would take less hours now sees the Moroccans take 8 hours to get to Algeria.

This is because they have to fly to Tunisia first and then connect to Algeria.

Morocco’s FA President Faouzi Lekjaa confirmed that they will pull out of the tournament in case their request is not honored.

This was arrived at after a meeting of the Executive board.

Algeria after a few riots in the country including the fires that broke out in Rabat in 2021 severed relations with their neighbors.

They accused Morocco of trying to destabilize their country.

Meanwhile Morocco who impressed at the recent 2022 Qatar World Cup are the defending champions.

They will be looking to take the crown for the third consecutive time after winning the previous two beating both Nigeria and Mali in 2018 and 2020 respectively.

Nicknamed the Atlas Lions, Walid Regragui’s side are in Group C alongside Sudan, Madagascar and Ghana.
