Uganda Cranes bag 3 points in Tanzania with injury time winner

March 28, 2023

Uganda Cranes are back in the mix of qualifying for the 2023 AFCON tournament after beating Tanzania by a goal to nil.

The Cranes came in the game needing to pick up maximum 3 points to stand any chance of qualifying for the final tournament.

And having been beaten by the Taifa Stars in a game they hosted in Egypt, it was pay back time.

Ivorian referee Ibrahim Traore however had to stop the game for more than 30 minutes.

This is after there was a problem with the floodlights at the Benjamin Mkapa stadium.

The game was later however resumed after the problem was sorted out.

The first half ended with noth sides tied at 0-0.

Micho made some substitutes in tje second half with captain Emma Okwi and Richard Basangwa getting replaced by Rogers Mato and Fahad Bayo in the 63rd minute.

Travis Mutyaba replaced Joseph Ochaya in the 76th minute.

Despite both sides pushing for a win, none seemed to get any and Tanzania looked like they were on the course of a vital point.

However, KCCA forward Rogers Mato struck the nerve of the Taifa Stars in the 91st minute of additional time.

There wasn’t much the Tanzanians could do in the remaining few minutes and the Cranes walked away with the 3 points.

It should be recalled that Algeria beat Niger in the other game of Group F by a goal to nil.

The North Africans top this group with 12 points having won all the 4 games.

Tanzania and Uganda are now tied on 4 points but with the Taifa Stars on top because of alphabetical order.

Apparently Uganda Cranes will be back in action on the 12 th of June hosting Algeria.
