Trophy drought at SC Villa continues as Vipers are crowned league champions

May 27, 2023

SC Villa came short of the ultimate prize on the D-day of the Star Times Uganda Premier League climax.

The Jogoos came in the game in the driving seat as they topped the league on 52 points. However, they had Vipers and KCCA on their tail on 50 points.

Jackson Magera’s side knew that they had to pick up none other than 3 points to be crowned league champions.

Villa who have emerged as the dark horse in the 2022-2023 season however couldn’t overcome URA which they last beat in 2018.

A Najib Fesali header in the 61st minute was enough to hand the tax collectors maximum points.

On the other hand, KCCA thrashed Soltilo Bright Stars 5-0.

The Kasasiro Boys were also in the title race and hoped that Villa and Vipers would falter.

Rogers Mato netted a quadruple while the other goal was scored by Charles Lwanga.

It was however Vipers who walked away with the trophy. The Venoms were able to defend their title as they ran riot at Kitende thumping Busoga United 5-0.

Abubakar Lawal (2), Yunus Sentamu, Martin Kiiza and Bright Anukani gave Alex Isabirye his first trophy in charge of the Kitende based club.

This means that Vipers have won their 6th league title and will be the representatives of Uganda in the CAF Champions League if they manage to make it through the qualifying round.
