Argentina’s 2022 World Cup winning captain, Lionel Messi will have six of his shirts won in the tournament go on market for sale. Part of the proceeds will go to a hospital in Barcelona.
Besides these La Albiceleste shirts are estimated to sell for over 10m dollars. And this will make them the most expensive sports memorabilia ever put up for auction if they meet the valuation.
“The most valuable sports collection that has ever come to auction,” Sothebys explained in a statement.
Apparently they will go on sale on December 14 at Sotheby’s in New York. The 6 shirts being auctioned are are match worn shirts as used by the striker on the path to the 2022 trophy during the first half of the final, semi-final game, quarter-final game vs Netherlands, round of 32 tie and two of the group stage matches.
Apparently the one he wore in the final against France won’t be available. Bidding for the shirts will take place between 30 November -14 December. If these shirts exceed 10.1m dollars, they will become the most expensive sports memorabilia in history.
Currently Basketball legend Michael Jordan’s shirt won in the 1998 NBA final is the most expensive standing at $10.091 million. Additionally it’s followed by Diego Armando Maradona’s jersey in which he scored the famous ‘Hand of God’ goal in the 1986 World Cup against England. It sold for $9.28 million.
