On Thursday night at MTN Omondi Stadium, NEC FC defeated league leaders Kitara FC by a slim 1-0 score to get back on the winning track. The Hoima-based team lost to the Hussein Mbalangu-coached team by the narrowest of margins thanks to a goal from Cromwell Rwothomio in the second half.
Jasper Aheebwa of Kitara was fortunate to avoid seeing red in the opening period because he fouled on Rashid Okocha at the boundary. Referee Stephen Kimayo only showed him yellow. Rwothomio gave the home team the lead in the 65th minute by heading home a flawless cross from Joseph Dhata.
With just the goalkeeper to beat, Kitara pushed for the equalizer and almost got past Jude Semugabi, but his attempt struck the side net.
After winning, NEC FC moved up to 40 points, one spot behind SC Villa in second position, and Kitara at the top with 44 points. After being fed by Semugabi, Brian Aheebwa thought he had given the visitors a point again, but the assistant referee called his goal offside.
