Uganda Cranes attacker Travis Mutyaba joins French side Bordeaux
October 1, 2024
Travis Mutyaba, a forward for the Uganda Cranes, has finalized his transfer to Girondins de Bordeaux in France. The former playmaker for SC Villa, whose contract with Egyptian Giants Zamalek SC expired in August, has signed as a free agent to join the fourth division French team.
It was determined that Mutyaba and his agents chose to leave Zamalek due to the club’s transfer ban, which might have impeded the player’s ability to go to Europe.
Mutyaba left record Uganda Premier League winners SC Villa to take a four and a half year contract with Zamalek.
After Zamalek SC defeated RS Berkane in the May 2018 CAF Confederation Cup final on the basis of the away goals rule, he became the first player from Uganda to win the competition.
Bordeaux, Mutyaba’s new home, is one of the most successful football teams in France. It was established as a multi-sports club on October 1, 1881.
The team last won a Division 1/Ligue 1 championship in 2009. Bordeaux has also won three Coupe de la Ligue titles, three Trophée des champions awards, and four Coupe de France titles.
Bordeaux made it to the Latin Cup final in 1950 as well as the UEFA Cup final in 1996, where they were defeated by Bayern Munich.
Bordeaux’s home stadium is now the Matmut Atlantique. The club’s original stadium was the Stade Chaban-Delmas.
Bordeaux was administratively demoted to the Championnat National at the conclusion of the 2023–24 season. The club first filed an appeal against the ruling, but it eventually abandoned the case.
On August, 1st 2024, due to insolvency, Bordeaux was forcibly relegated to the Championnat National 2 and put into financial administration by the French football regulatory body, the National Directorate of Management Control/DNCG.
Notable players who have played for Bordeaux include left back Bixente Lizarazu, attacker Christophe Dugarry, and great player Zinedine Zidane.
Additionally, Andy Carroll, a former striker for Newcastle and Liverpool, currently resides there.
