Denis Onyango cements his place as most decorated footballer in the South African league
April 3, 2023
Former Uganda Cranes captain Denis Onyango who plays for South African side Mamelodi Sundowns cemented his place over the weekend in the Premier Soccer League (PSL).
The goalkeeper racked up a record breaking 10th league winners medal after Mamelodi were confirmed as the champions.
The Masandawana won their 6th consecutive league title despite not playing over the weekend.
This is after second placed Orlando Pirates, Kaizer Chiefs and SuperSport United failed to win their games.
Mamelodi is now 19 points ahead of the two clubs with 6 games to go and the Sundowners have a game in hand.
This will be Mamelodi’s 16th title overall.
For Onyango it’s the 10th making him further the most decorated player in the South African league a record he previously held after last season’s league trophy.
Onyango has however had less significance in this season’s league trophy.
He’s been limited to just 5 starts for the club.
It has rather been new goalie and captain of the South African national team, Bafana Bafana Ronwen Williams who has been between the sticks.
Ronwen has made 28 starts in all competitions under coach Rhulani Mokwena.
Meanwhile Onyango won 3 league titles with SuperSport United and a further 7 with Mamelodi Sundowns.
Some of his other honors include CAF Champions League, the CAF Super Cup, three Nedbank Cup titles, one MTN 8 title and two Telkom Cup titles.
He also won the goalkeeper of the year in the PSL twice in 2015/16 and 2021/22.
