Heung Min Son breaks down after South Korea exit in Asian Cup
February 8, 2024
Heung-min Son the captain of Tottenham Hotspur, apologized deeply following his nation’s Asian Cup elimination.
Son was hoping to lead South Korea to victory in the competition and lift a significant prize for his nation. South Korea advanced to the tournament’s semi-final, where they took against Jordan on Tuesday.
That being said, Son and company would lose 2-0 at the Ahmad bin Ali Stadium. Jordan’s goals in the second half came from Yazan al-Naimat and Musa al-Taamari, eliminating South Korea from the tournament.
South Korea, who went into the match as the tournament favorite, was considerably taken aback by the loss. However, with the loss to Jordan, Son and his teammates will now resume their individual club responsibilities.
When Son blasted a strike past goalkeeper Yazeed Abulaila in the 19th minute, he believed he had given South Korea the lead. However, Son has since apologized deeply for the way his nation was eliminated from the competition after the attempt was rightfully flagged out for offside.
“Many people were looking forward to holding the Asian Cup Tournament and focusing only on the whole game, so there was too much appreciation,” wrote Son on Instagram.
“It was scary and sad to [go] back to London after the match, but we arrived safely. I guess I wasn’t good enough as captain and didn’t lead the team well.
“I was so proud of being a Korean football player because of your love and support, even in this situation. Thank you and I am sorry.”
Now, Son will go back to North London and rejoin Ange Postecouglou’s team. The next game for Spurs is against Brighton at home on Saturday, which may mark Son’s return to the team after his absence on New Year’s Eve. Heung min Son Asian Cup
