May 9, 2023
PSG and Argentina forward Lionel Messi was yet at the end of a glorious night as he bagged two prestigious awards. Messi won the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year.
He also won the Laureus World Team of the Year Award as his country Argentina won this award for their triumph in the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. This made him the first athlete to win the two awards at once.
“History maker! Lionel Messi is the first ever athlete to win the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year and Laureus World Team of the Year Awards in the same year.”
Meanwhile this was the second time the 7 time Ballon D’or winner was winning this award. Besides, he’s the only footballer to have won this award.
Speaking about this award, Messi said that he was grateful to be recognized and competing with some of the best athletes. Besides, his greatest joy of winning a world cup for his country had come true lst year.
“It’s nice to receive recognition of this type, this year I was lucky to fulfill my great dream”. “I went through everything, many joys with Barcelona and many sadness with the national team, but I never stopped”.
The former Barcelona player has also been tipped by many to win this year’s Ballon D’or. He however might face stiff competition from Manchester City’s Erling Halaand depending on how Man City’s season ends.
