Ghanaian ex Chelsea and Newcastle footballer Christian Atsu confirmed dead

February 18, 2023

Ghanaian footballer Christian Atsu has been confirmed dead after a severe earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria about a fortnight ago.

This was confirmed by his agent Murat Uzunmehmet.

Atsu 31 years old has been missing for 12 days prior to being confirmed dead.

The agent said that “Atsu’s lifeless body was found under the rubble. Currently, more items are still being taken out. His phone was also found.”

‘It is with the heaviest of hearts that I have to announce to all well wishers that sadly Christian Atsu’s body was recovered this morning,’ he said.
‘My deepest condolences go to his family and loved ones. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their prayers and support.”

His club Hatayspor also eulogized the winger saying there were no words to describe him.

‘The funeral of our football player Christian Atsu, who lost his life under the collapse, is on his way to be sent to his hometown Ghana,’ they said on Twitter – as they blacked out their profile picture.
‘We will not forget you, Atsu. Peace be upon you, beautiful person. There are no words to describe our sadness. Rest in peace.”

Rumors previously had stated how the footballer had been discovered and taken to hospital.

This was however debunked by his agent and Hatayspor.

Hopes were therefore kept among people that the former Chelsea, Newcastle, Bournemouth and Everton would be discovered alive.

Atsu is vividly remembered for winning the player of rhe tournament in the 2015 AFCON tournament where Ghana emerged 2nd.

More than 42,000 people have so far been confirmed dead and thousands left homeless.

Several of his former teammates and clubs have come out to pay tribute to the player who made over 258 professional appearances.

May his soul rest in peace
