Controversial KCCA- Wakiso Giants game costs Ugandan referee place at the U20 AFCON tournament

February 22, 2023

The controversial game between KCCA FC and Wakiso Giants in the Uganda Premier League seems to have cost Ugandan referee Ali Sabila a place at the U20 AFCON tournament in Egypt.

It should be recalled that the game was won by KCCA FC by a goal to nil at the Kabaka Kyabaggu stadium.

According to replays, Sabila refused to award a clear penalty to the Kasasiro boys after a foul on Allan Okello in the 18 yard box.

The ball was then picked up by the table leaders attacker, Rogers Mato who scored a controversial goal.

After the foul on Okello, Mato picked up the ball and scored but he was from an offside position.

Footage further shows how Wakiso Giants defender Lawrence Bukenya and Mato had collided out of the pitch.

With Wakiso Giants goalkeeper, Samson Kirya out of goal, it made him the last defender.

And Lawrence Bukenya who was behind his goalkeeper was presumed to be the goalie.

Therefore this made Mato offside as he was also behind Kirya.

However, Sabila a FIFA badge holder awarded the goal after consulting the assistant referee, Ronald Katenya.

This game had Ali Mohamed Ahmed one of the heads of match officials in the CECAFA region in Attendance.

There is a strong feeling that this poor officiating could have cost Sabila a place in Egypt.

There are 16 referees. 18 assistant referees and six video assistant referees (VAR) in the ongoing AFCON U20 tournament in Egypt.
