June 19, 2023

Results in Group F

Tanzania 1-0 Niger – Tanzania.

Uganda 1-2 Algeria – Cameroon.

Uganda Cranes hopes of qualifying for AFCON 2023 were dented by Algeria after a 2-1 loss by the North African side at Jopama Stadium in Cameroon.

Uganda Cranes came into the game well aware that their positional rival in group F ‘ Tanzania ‘ had won their game against Niger.

Fahad Bayo scored in the 89th minute though it was too late to cancel Mohamed Amoura’s brace.

Uganda Cranes started a better side with possession and several attacks against a second team Algeria.

All stars including Riyad Mahrez, Said Benrahma, Nabil Bentaleb and Hossem Aouar were left on the bench but still Uganda didn’t utilise the chance.

Despite Uganda being with possession, Algeria played maturely with good attacks that would earn them an opener.

In the 42nd minute, Goalkeeper Salim Jamal Magoola errored when his pass was easily intercepted by Harris Belkebla who then took a shot but Magoola still failed to handle the moment in a mature way.

Magoola spilled the shot that was later scored in by Mohamed Amoura.

Micho opted for a goal to change things that saw him introduce Striker Fahad Bayo in for midfielder Bobosi Byaruhanga.

But still Algeria had a better start in the second half with Salim Jamal making one fine save.

Nevertheless, Left back Abdul Aziz Kayondo failed to stop Algeria’s counter attack that resulted in a second a goal when Manchester City‘s Riyadh Mahrez easily settled in for Mohamed Amoura in the 65th minute.

More attacking players were brought in like Richard Bassangwa for Milton Karisa, Travis Mutyaba for Farouk Miya, Isma Mugulusi for Emmanuel Okwi.

Uganda Cranes only best chance came in the 88th minute when Richard Bassangwa set for Fahad Bayo for a consolation.

The results means Uganda Cranes remained third with 4 points, Algeria who are already qualified tops with 15 points while a win for Tanzania against Niger maintained their Second position on 7 points.

Uganda will finish up their qualification campaign with an away trip to Niger in September, for Tanzania they will have to visit Algeria in Algiers.

For Uganda to qualify, they will need to win their last game against Niger andhopeAlgeria to defeat Tanzania on a better goal margin.
